Michigan State has been known as the Spartans since 1926, when a local sportswriter made an executive decision with lasting consequences. After a public contest determined that “Michigan Staters” would be the school’s replacement for “Aggies”, George S. Alderton intervened, deciding the winner was too much of a mouthful. The editor of the Lansing State Journal instead selected “Spartans” from the entry pool, and the rest, as they say, is Michigan State history. Show your love for Sparty and the Green and White in super-soft style. Pay homage.
